DC04 (1.0338) / ASTM A1008 DDS / IS 513 CR3 / JIS SPCE cold-rolled sheet
DC04 (1.0338) is the deep-drawing cold-rolled low-carbon steel sheet of EN 10130, the usual choice for automotive and appliance pressings. Its nearest names are ASTM A1008 DDS, IS 513 CR3 (DD) and JIS G 3141 SPCE.

On equivalence
- DC04, DDS, CR3 and SPCE all target deep-drawing quality but are not identical. DC04 sits between ASTM DS and DDS in strength: its 210 MPa yield limit is above the DDS typical range (115–200 MPa).
- IS 513 CR3 gives A80 of 34 % against 38 % for DC04 and has no r or n requirement, so deep draws should be validated before substituting.
- SPCE is the closest in chemistry (C 0.08 %, P 0.030 %, S 0.030 %). Its yield limit of 220 MPa is informative and its elongation of 41 % at 1.0–1.6 mm is a little above DC04's.
- ASTM A1008 gives only typical properties for DDS, so there is no mandatory mechanical match to EN 10130.
- In BS 1449 usage CR1 is DC04, but IS 513 CR1 is commercial quality. The name alone does not identify the grade.

In practice
Behaviour, heat treatment and uses
Characteristics
- Aluminium-killed low-carbon steel (C 0.08 % maximum) with guaranteed r90 of 1.6 and n90 of 0.18, which gives good deep-drawing and stretch-forming behaviour.
- Yield strength of 140–210 MPa, tensile strength of 270–350 MPa and A80 of at least 38 % at nominal thickness.
- Mechanical properties are valid for six months from dispatch, and surface quality A and B are guaranteed free of stretcher-strain marks for the same period.
- May contain boron or titanium. Ageing is controlled for six months, not indefinitely; DC06, the stabilised IF grade, has no such time limit.
- EN 10130 defines two surface qualities. Quality A allows small defects that do not impair forming or coating (pores, light scratches, slight dents, slight colour change). Quality B requires the better side to be free of defects that would show through high-grade paint or electroplating, with the other side at least quality A; B is for skin-passed product only and not every size is offered in it.
- Skin-passed sheet can be ordered with a roughness finish: bright b (Ra up to 0.4 µm), semi-bright g (up to 0.9 µm), normal m (0.6–1.9 µm, the default) or rough r (above 1.6 µm). The finish cannot be specified for non-skin-passed product.
- Thin gauges: yield strength limit rises by 20 MPa from 0.5 to 0.7 mm and by 40 MPa at 0.5 mm and below, and minimum A80 falls by 2 and 4 points. r90 and n90 apply from 0.5 mm; above 2 mm r90 falls by 0.2.
- Welds readily by resistance spot and arc processes because of the low carbon and manganese content.
- Available as DC04+ZE (electrolytic zinc, EN 10152) and as DX54D hot-dip galvanized (EN 10346); the coated grades have their own standards.
Heat treatment
- Supplied cold rolled, then annealed (batch or continuous) and skin-passed. It is a non-hardening steel; quenching adds nothing.
- Skin passing sets the surface finish and suppresses stretcher-strain lines. Form within the six-month property period before ageing brings the yield point back.
- Preheat is not normally needed when welding thin sheet; stress relieving is not required.
Usages types
- Automotive inner panels, brackets and structural pressings of moderate depth
- Appliance housings, drums and drawn cases
- Deep-drawn containers and cups
- Pressed parts that are later painted or electroplated
- Complex stampings where DC03 shows splitting

Questions et réponses
Common questions
What is the equivalent of DC04?
The closest equivalents are ASTM A1008 DDS, IS 513 CR3 (DD) and JIS G 3141 SPCE. The old German name is St 14 and the EN 10130:1991 name is FeP04.
Is SPCE the same as DC04?
SPCE is the nearest JIS grade and has almost the same carbon, phosphorus and sulphur limits. Its yield limit (220 MPa) and elongation (41 % at 1.0–1.6 mm) differ slightly, and JIS sets no r90 or n90 for it.
What is the difference between DC04 and DC05?
DC05 has lower carbon (0.06 % maximum), a yield limit of 180 MPa against 210 MPa, A80 of 40 % against 38 %, r90 of 1.9 against 1.6 and n90 of 0.20 against 0.18. It suits more severe draws.
Is IS 513 CR3 equivalent to DC04?
It is the usual Indian pairing but not the same specification. CR3 allows more carbon (0.10 %) and requires only 34 % elongation, against 0.08 % and 38 % for DC04.
Is DC04 non-ageing?
Not permanently. EN 10130 guarantees its properties and a surface free of stretcher-strain marks for six months from dispatch. After that, ageing can bring back yield-point elongation. DC06 is the stabilised grade.
