DC03 (1.0347) / ASTM A1008 DS / IS 513 CR2 / JIS SPCD cold-rolled sheet

DC03 (1.0347) is the drawing-quality cold-rolled low-carbon steel sheet of EN 10130, used for pressed and drawn parts of moderate depth. Its nearest names are ASTM A1008 DS, IS 513 CR2 (D) and JIS G 3141 SPCD.

On equivalence

  • DC03, DS Type B, CR2 and SPCD all describe drawing quality but are not identical. A1008 DS limits P and S to 0.020 % each, tighter than DC03's 0.035 %, while IS 513 CR2 allows 0.040 % P and 0.035 % S.
  • IS 513 CR2 has the same yield limit (240 MPa) and tensile limit (370 MPa) as DC03 but a lower A80 minimum (30 % against 34 %) and no r90 requirement, so deep pressings may behave differently.
  • ASTM A1008 gives only typical properties for DS (yield 150–240 MPa, r-bar 1.3–1.7), so there is no mandatory mechanical match to EN 10130.
  • SPCD has no r requirement and its upper yield limit of 240 MPa is informative; it is applied only by agreement.
  • BS 1449 pairings for DC03 differ between sources (CR2 or CR3). The old German name is St 13 or RRSt 13; the grade is aluminium killed in EN 10130.

In practice

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Aluminium-killed low-carbon steel (C 0.10 % maximum) with a guaranteed r90 of 1.3, giving better drawing performance than DC01 for pressings, boxes and shallow-to-medium drawn parts.
  • Yield strength of 140–240 MPa, tensile strength of 270–370 MPa and A80 of at least 34 % at nominal thickness; no n90 requirement.
  • Mechanical properties are valid for six months from dispatch, and surface quality A and B are guaranteed free of stretcher-strain marks for the same period.
  • EN 10130 defines two surface qualities. Quality A allows small defects that do not impair forming or coating (pores, light scratches, slight dents, slight colour change). Quality B requires the better side to be free of defects that would show through high-grade paint or electroplating, with the other side at least quality A; B is for skin-passed product only and not every size is offered in it.
  • Skin-passed sheet can be ordered with a roughness finish: bright b (Ra up to 0.4 µm), semi-bright g (up to 0.9 µm), normal m (0.6–1.9 µm, the default) or rough r (above 1.6 µm). The finish cannot be specified for non-skin-passed product.
  • Thin gauges: yield strength limit rises by 20 MPa from 0.5 to 0.7 mm and by 40 MPa at 0.5 mm and below, and minimum A80 falls by 2 and 4 points. r90 and n90 apply from 0.5 mm; above 2 mm r90 falls by 0.2.
  • Welds readily by resistance spot, MIG and similar processes because of the low carbon and manganese content.
  • Available as DC03+ZE (electrolytic zinc, EN 10152). In hot-dip galvanized form the nearest EN 10346 grade is DX53D, whose limits are looser (A80 ≥30 %, no r-value requirement).

Heat treatment

  • Supplied cold rolled, then annealed (batch or continuous) and skin-passed. It is a non-hardening steel; quenching adds nothing.
  • Skin passing sets the surface finish and suppresses stretcher-strain lines. Ageing brings the yield-point elongation back, which is why the property period is limited to six months; form within that period.
  • Preheat is not normally needed when welding thin sheet; stress relieving is not required.

Usages types

  • Pressed and drawn parts of moderate depth, such as housings, covers and cases
  • Appliance panels, cabinets and enclosures
  • Automotive and transport brackets and internal pressings
  • Furniture and office equipment components
  • Stamped and formed parts that are later painted or electroplated

Questions et réponses

Common questions

What is the equivalent of DC03?

The closest equivalents are ASTM A1008 DS (Type B), IS 513 CR2 (D) and JIS G 3141 SPCD. The old German name is St 13 or RRSt 13 and the EN 10130:1991 name is FeP03.

Is IS 513 CR2 the same as DC03?

They are the usual pairing, not the same specification. Both limit yield to 240 MPa and tensile strength to 370 MPa, but CR2 requires 30 % elongation (A80) against 34 % for DC03 and has no r90 requirement.

What is the difference between DC03 and DC04?

DC04 is the deeper drawing grade. It has lower carbon (0.08 % maximum), a lower yield limit (210 MPa against 240 MPa), A80 of 38 % against 34 %, r90 of 1.6 against 1.3 and a guaranteed n90 of 0.18.

How long can DC03 be stored before forming?

EN 10130 states property validity of six months for DC03, DC04 and DC05, and sheet in surface quality A or B is guaranteed free of stretcher-strain marks for that time. After that the yield point returns and forming marks may appear.

Is DC03 the same as DX53D?

No. DC03 is uncoated cold-rolled sheet under EN 10130. DX53D is the nearest zinc-coated grade under EN 10346, but its limits are looser (A80 ≥30 % and no r-value requirement). Electrolytic zinc coated DC03 is DC03+ZE.
