DC01 (1.0330) / ASTM A1008 CS / IS 513 CR1 / JIS SPCC cold-rolled sheet

DC01 (1.0330) is the commercial-quality cold-rolled low-carbon steel sheet of EN 10130, used for bending, profiling and light forming. Its nearest names are ASTM A1008 CS Type B, IS 513 CR1 and JIS G 3141 SPCC.

On equivalence

  • DC01, CS Type B, CR1 and SPCC are close but not identical. DC01 limits P and S to 0.045 % each; SPCC allows 0.100 % P and CR1 allows 0.050 % P and 0.040 % S.
  • SPCC has no tensile guarantee unless ordered as SPCCT, and IS 513 does not normally guarantee CR1 mechanical values. DC01 always carries a tensile range of 270–410 MPa and an A80 minimum.
  • ASTM A1008 gives only typical properties for CS (yield 140–275 MPa), so there is no mandatory mechanical match to EN 10130.
  • The name CR1 is used by VDA 239-100 for DC01 and by IS 513 for the commercial grade. In BS 1449 cross-references CR4 is commercial steel (DC01) and CR1 the deep-drawing grade (DC04). Check the standard named on an order before substituting.
  • Yield strength in EN 10130 is shown as a maximum. Some mill sheets show a range of 140–280 MPa; the lower figure is a design assumption, not a purchase minimum.
  • JIS G 3141:2021 allows SPCC manganese up to 1.00 % (Total Materia); the 2011 edition printed ≤0.60 %.

In practice

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Low-carbon steel (C 0.12 % maximum) with no guaranteed plastic strain ratio (r90) or strain-hardening exponent (n90), so it is suited to bending, roll forming, shallow drawing and general sheet-metal work rather than deep drawing.
  • EN 10130 limits yield strength only from above (280 MPa maximum), with tensile strength of 270–410 MPa and A80 of at least 28 % at nominal thickness. ReL of at least 140 MPa may be assumed for design.
  • Deoxidation is left to the maker's discretion and boron or titanium may be present; DC03 and above are specified as aluminium killed.
  • No ageing guarantee: DC01 is not covered by the six-month property period of the deep-drawing grades, and one standards summary gives only three months free of stretcher-strain marks for surface quality B.
  • EN 10130 defines two surface qualities. Quality A allows small defects that do not impair forming or coating (pores, light scratches, slight dents, slight colour change). Quality B requires the better side to be free of defects that would show through high-grade paint or electroplating, with the other side at least quality A; B is for skin-passed product only and not every size is offered in it.
  • Skin-passed sheet can be ordered with a roughness finish: bright b (Ra up to 0.4 µm), semi-bright g (up to 0.9 µm), normal m (0.6–1.9 µm, the default) or rough r (above 1.6 µm). The finish cannot be specified for non-skin-passed product.
  • Thin gauges: yield strength limit rises by 20 MPa from 0.5 to 0.7 mm and by 40 MPa at 0.5 mm and below, and minimum A80 falls by 2 and 4 points. r90 and n90 apply from 0.5 mm; above 2 mm r90 falls by 0.2.
  • Welds readily by resistance spot, MIG and similar processes because of the low carbon and manganese content.
  • Available electrolytically zinc coated as DC01+ZE under EN 10152; the coated grade has its own standard.

Heat treatment

  • Supplied cold rolled, then annealed (batch or continuous) and skin-passed. It is a non-hardening steel; nothing is gained from quenching.
  • Skin passing sets the surface finish and removes the yield-point elongation that causes stretcher-strain (Lüders) lines. Without an ageing guarantee, form soon after delivery.
  • Preheat is not normally needed for welding thin sheet; stress relieving is not required.

Usages types

  • Bent, profiled and roll-formed sections, brackets and covers
  • Appliance housings, panels and enclosures
  • Furniture, shelving and office equipment
  • Electrical cabinets and light fittings
  • Tube and pipe made from strip, and general sheet-metal fabrication

Questions et réponses

Common questions

What is the equivalent of DC01?

The closest equivalents are ASTM A1008 CS Type B, IS 513 CR1 and JIS G 3141 SPCC. The old German name is St 12 and the old EN 10130:1991 name is FeP01. They match on commercial forming quality but their composition limits and guaranteed properties differ.

Is DC01 the same as SPCC?

They are used interchangeably, but they are not identical. SPCC allows up to 0.15 % carbon and 0.100 % phosphorus against 0.12 % and 0.045 % for DC01, and SPCC has no guaranteed tensile strength unless ordered as SPCCT.

Is DC01 good for deep drawing?

No. EN 10130 sets no r90 or n90 value for DC01, so it is meant for bending, profiling and shallow forming. Use DC03 or DC04 for drawn parts and DC05 or DC06 for the most severe draws.

What is the difference between DC01 and DC03?

DC03 has lower carbon and manganese (0.10 % and 0.45 % maximum), a lower yield limit (240 MPa against 280 MPa), a higher A80 (34 % against 28 %) and a guaranteed r90 of 1.3. It is aluminium killed and has a six-month ageing guarantee.

What do surface qualities A and B mean on DC01 sheet?

Quality A permits minor surface defects that do not affect forming or coating. Quality B requires the better side to be fit for high-grade painting or electroplating. B is supplied skin-passed only.
