DX51D+Z / 1.0226 galvanized steel sheet (EN 10346; ASTM A653 CS, IS 277 GP, JIS SGCC)

DX51D+Z (1.0226) is the commercial-quality hot-dip galvanized sheet steel of EN 10346, used for roofing, cladding, ducting and other parts that are bent or roll-formed but not deep drawn. Its nearest names are ASTM A653 CS Type B, IS 277 GP or GPL and JIS G 3302 SGCC, and the zinc coating is ordered separately (Z275 means 275 g/m² of zinc, total on both sides).

On equivalence

  • None of the cross-region names is identical to DX51D. All are closest matches for commercial-quality galvanized sheet.
  • ASTM A653 CS Type B is the usual American match. A653 CS mechanical ranges are typical rather than mandatory, while EN 10346 specifies a tensile range and a minimum A80. A653 quotes elongation over 50 mm (2 in) and EN 10346 over 80 mm (A80), so the elongation figures do not compare directly.
  • IS 277:2018 uses its own grade names. GP is the ordinary grade with no mechanical limits; GPL (lock forming) is the nearest to DX51D in chemistry, but its limits are maxima for yield and tensile strength.
  • JIS SGCC lists yield (205 MPa) and tensile (270 MPa) values for reference only, so it is a quality description rather than a guaranteed strength.
  • Coating mass equivalence (minimum total both sides, triple-spot average): Z275 = G90 (A653) = class 275 (IS 277) = Z27 (JIS). Likewise Z200 = class 200 (IS 277) = Z20 (JIS); Z350 = class 350 = Z35 (JIS), with G115 as the A653 inch-pound counterpart; G60 = Z180 (A653) = class 180 (IS 277) = Z18 (JIS). EN 10346 has no Z180: use Z140 or Z200.
  • The inch-pound to metric conversion is 1 oz/ft² = 305 g/m², so G90 is 274.5 g/m²; A653M states it as Z275 (International Zinc Association).
  • Check the edition and the test method: single-spot minimums differ between standards (IS 277 class 275 is 235 g/m²; JIS Z27 is 234 g/m²).
  • DIN St 02 Z and Fe P02 G are old names; Bucher Stahl and Applus datasheets list them against DX51D.

In practice

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • EN 10346 sets only a tensile range (270–500 MPa) and a minimum A80 of 22 % for DX51D. It sets no yield, r-value or n-value, so deep drawing is outside its intended use.
  • Zinc protects the steel by acting as a barrier and by corroding in preference at scratches and cut edges.
  • The grade is made with several coatings under EN 10346: zinc (+Z), zinc-iron (+ZF), and aluminium-based or zinc-aluminium coatings such as +AZ, +ZA and +AS.
  • Carbon is capped at 0.18 %, so the base steel welds readily; weld through the coating only with fume extraction, because zinc vaporizes.
  • Tighter forming grades follow in the same standard: DX52D, DX53D, DX54D and above add yield limits and, from DX54D, r and n values.

Heat treatment

  • Supplied as coated, annealed strip or cut sheet; no further heat treatment is intended.
  • Zinc melts at about 420 °C, so annealing, stress relieving or hot forming after coating will damage the zinc layer.
  • Forming and bending are done cold.

Typical uses

  • Roofing, wall cladding and rainwater goods
  • Roll-formed profiles, purlins and framing sections (light gauge)
  • Ducting and air-handling casings
  • Cable trays, enclosures, racking and shelving
  • General sheet-metal fabrication where deep drawing is not needed

Questions answered

Common questions

What does DX51D+Z275 mean?

DX51D is the EN 10346 grade name: D marks a hot-dip coated flat product for cold forming and 51 is the quality number (1.0226). +Z275 is the coating: zinc at a minimum of 275 g/m² in total on both sides. Orders often add a spangle code (N normal, M minimized) and a surface quality (A, B or C).

What is the equivalent of DX51D in ASTM?

ASTM A653/A653M CS Type B is the closest. CS Type A is also used. The match is not exact: DX51D permits carbon up to 0.18 % and manganese up to 1.20 %, and A653 gives only typical, non-mandatory mechanical ranges for CS.

Is Z275 the same as G90?

They describe the same minimum zinc mass: G90 is 0.90 oz/ft² and Z275 is 275 g/m², each total on both sides. The International Zinc Association gives G90 = Z275 as the standard conversion. Their steel grades and test rules still differ, so order both the base grade and the coating.

What is the Indian equivalent of DX51D?

Within IS 277:2018 the closest are GP (ordinary) and GPL (drawing, lock forming), with coating class 275 for a Z275 equivalent. The Indian grade names are GP-based, not DX-based, and GP has no mechanical limits in the table.

What is the difference between DX51D and DX53D?

DX53D is a deep-drawing grade with lower carbon (≤0.12 %), a yield range of 140–260 MPa, tensile strength 270–380 MPa and at least 30 % A80. DX51D has no yield limit, a wider 270–500 MPa tensile range and 22 % A80, and is meant for bending and profiling.
