DD11 / 1.0332 hot-rolled steel sheet and strip (EN 10111, close to ASTM A1011 CS, IS 1079 HR1, JIS SPHC)

DD11 (1.0332) is the commercial-quality grade of EN 10111, a low-carbon hot-rolled strip made for cold forming. Its nearest equivalents are ASTM A1011 CS Type B, IS 1079 HR1 and JIS G 3131 SPHC, but none of them is identical.

On equivalence

  • No equivalent is identical. DD11, ASTM A1011 CS Type B, IS 1079 HR1 and JIS SPHC all describe low-carbon commercial-quality hot-rolled sheet, but their limits are set differently.
  • EN 10111 sets maximum yield and tensile strength; JIS G 3131 sets a 270 MPa minimum tensile strength; ASTM A1011 CS sets chemistry only. Do not substitute one for another where a mechanical limit is on the drawing.
  • ASTM A1011 has no tension-test requirement for CS Type B, so the figures shown for it are chemistry limits, not mechanical guarantees.
  • Sources disagree on the legacy UK name: Moris pairs DD11 with BS 1449 HR2, while other references pair BS 1449 HR1 with commercial quality. Treat the BS 1449 names as closest only.
  • The IS 1079 grade tables could be read for tensile maximum and elongation only (from Tata Steel); the composition limits for HR1 were not found in a source we could verify.

In practice

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Low carbon (≤0.12 %) and low alloy, so it forms, bends and welds readily with common processes; no preheat is normally needed in thin gauges.
  • The lowest-formability grade of the DD11 to DD14 series: higher grades (DD12, DD13, DD14) trade strength for elongation.
  • EN 10111 limits yield and tensile strength from above (maximums) so the steel stays soft enough to form; it is not a minimum-strength structural grade.
  • Aluminium, silicon and carbon-equivalent limits are not set for DD grades in EN 10111, so weldability rests on the low carbon and manganese.
  • Not intended for load-bearing structures where a guaranteed minimum yield is required; use S235JR or S355MC style grades there.

Heat treatment

  • Supplied hot rolled from the coil; no heat treatment is applied or needed for forming.
  • Not hardened: the carbon is too low to respond to quenching, and it is not case-hardened in normal practice.
  • Stress relief or normalizing after heavy cold forming is possible but rarely specified; confirm with the forming drawing.
  • Pickling and oiling (to remove scale) and hot-dip galvanizing are applied after forming or at the coil stage by agreement.

Typical uses

  • Pressed and formed automotive and truck chassis parts, brackets and cross-members
  • Pipe and tube blanks, drums, cylinders and tanks
  • Profiled sections, shelving, racks and storage systems
  • General sheet-metal fabrications, covers and housings
  • Blanks for cold forming, stamping and roll forming

Questions answered

Common questions

What is the equivalent of DD11 steel?

The closest equivalents are ASTM A1011 CS Type B, IS 1079 HR1 and JIS G 3131 SPHC. All are commercial-quality low-carbon hot-rolled sheet, but none matches EN 10111 exactly: the limits on strength, chemistry and testing differ.

Is DD11 the same as SPHC?

They serve the same purpose but are different specifications. SPHC requires a minimum tensile strength of 270 MPa and allows up to 0.050 % phosphorus and sulphur; DD11 limits yield and tensile strength from above and allows 0.045 % at most.

What are the DD11 yield and tensile strength?

EN 10111 gives DD11 a yield range of 170–360 MPa under 2 mm and 170–340 MPa from 2 to 11 mm, with tensile strength up to 440 MPa. These are limits, not typical values: actual coils fall inside them.

What is the difference between DD11, DD12, DD13 and DD14?

The number sets the forming quality. DD11 is commercial quality; DD12 and DD13 have lower carbon and manganese and higher elongation; DD14 is the most formable. Maximum tensile strength falls from 440 MPa (DD11) to 380 MPa (DD14).

Is DD11 weldable?

Yes. With at most 0.12 % carbon and 0.60 % manganese it welds readily by MIG, TIG and resistance processes. Weld procedures usually need no preheat in thin gauges.
