On equivalence
- 1015 and C15E are close equivalents: carbon is 0.13–0.18 % against 0.12–0.18 % and manganese is 0.30–0.60 % in both. S15C has the same carbon range as 1015.
- The UK names carry more manganese. BS 970 080A15 has 0.70–0.90 % manganese and 080M15 is a higher-manganese grade, so neither is an exact match. Saarstahl lists both 040A15 and 080M15 against C15R.
- IS 15C8 (0.10–0.20 % carbon, 0.60–0.90 % manganese) is a higher-manganese Indian grade that sits nearer 1018 than 1015, so it is listed on the 1018 page.
- IS 15C4 has no carbon minimum (≤0.20 %), so it admits steel outside the 1015 range.
- S15C has the same manganese range as 1015, plus silicon 0.15–0.35 % and a tighter sulphur cap (0.035 % against 0.050 %).
- The C15E composition shown combines Total Materia's carbon, manganese and phosphorus limits with Kipp's silicon and sulphur limits.

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses
Characteristics
- Carbon 0.13–0.18 % and manganese 0.30–0.60 % (SAE J403) give a tough, easily formed steel with moderate strength.
- Saarstahl describes the C15R variant as an unalloyed case-hardening steel for wear-loaded parts with a core strength of 600–800 MPa, such as piston pins, camshafts and levers.
- The same Saarstahl sheet states that C15R is suitable for direct hardening.
- SAE J1397 estimated minimum yield is 190 MPa hot rolled and 320 MPa cold drawn.
- Low carbon gives good weldability and cold-forming behaviour.
Heat treatment
- Forging or rolling: about 1150–900 °C (2100–1650 °F) (Saarstahl, C15R).
- Normalizing: about 890–920 °C (1635–1690 °F), air cool (Saarstahl, C15R).
- Soft annealing: about 650–700 °C (1200–1290 °F), furnace cool; maximum 143 HB (Saarstahl, C15R).
- Carburizing: about 880–980 °C (1615–1795 °F) (Saarstahl, C15R).
- Core hardening: about 880–920 °C (1615–1690 °F) water quench; case hardening about 780–820 °C (1435–1510 °F) water quench (Saarstahl, C15R).
- Tempering after case hardening: about 150–200 °C (300–390 °F) (Saarstahl, C15R).
Usages types
- Case-hardened pins, studs and small shafts
- Camshafts, levers and piston pins
- Cold-formed and deep-drawn parts
- Welded fabrications and tube

Questions et réponses
Common questions
Is 1015 the same as C15E?
They are close equivalents. C15E (1.1141) has 0.12–0.18 % carbon and 0.30–0.60 % manganese, against 0.13–0.18 % and 0.30–0.60 % for 1015. C15E is a case-hardening steel under EN 10084.
What is the British equivalent of 1015?
The names given most often are 080M15 and 040A15 (BS 970). Neither matches exactly: 080M15 has more manganese. The old EN number for 080M15 is EN32 (also written EN32B).
What is the difference between 1015 and 1018?
1018 has 0.15–0.20 % carbon and 0.60–0.90 % manganese. 1015 has 0.13–0.18 % carbon and 0.30–0.60 % manganese, so it is softer, with an SAE J1397 estimated hot-rolled strength of 340 MPa against 400 MPa.
Is S15C equivalent to 1015?
Yes, as a close equivalent. S15C (JIS G 4051) has 0.13–0.18 % carbon, the same range as 1015, and Total Materia lists SAE 1015 as an official equivalent.
