On equivalence

  • No cross-region name is identical to S350GD. ASTM A653 SS Grade 50, IS 277 GP350 and JIS SGC440 or SGC490 are closest matches only.
  • A653 SS Grade 50 Class 1 is 340 MPa (50 ksi) yield with 450 MPa (65 ksi) tensile and 12 % elongation in 50 mm. Classes 2, 3 and 4 share the 340 MPa yield; tensile minimums are none, 480 MPa and 410 MPa. Class 3 limits phosphorus to 0.04 %.
  • JIS: SGC440 (335/440 MPa) is closer to S350GD than SGC490 (365/490 MPa), although SGC490 is the name usually listed in cross-reference charts.
  • IS 277:2018 uses GP-based names (GP230 to GP550), not YS names. GP350 Class-1 matches S350GD on yield and tensile, with A80 at 12 % against 16 %.
  • Other EN 10346 structural grades (minimum yield / tensile / A80): S220GD 220/300/20 %, S250GD 250/330/19 %, S280GD 280/360/18 %, S320GD 320/390/17 %, S390GD 390/460/16 %, S420GD 420/480/15 %, S550GD 550/560 MPa with no elongation value given.
  • Salzgitter lists old names for S350GD: StE 350-2 Z (DIN 17162-2), Grade D (printed as ASTM A 466 M), Z 35 (BS 2989), C 350 (NF A 36-322) and Fe E350 G (UNI 5783).
  • Sources differ on the phosphorus and manganese limits of A653 SS grades between editions: the U. S. Steel 2004-edition bulletin shows no manganese limit for the HDG structural grades, while the CSVC summary of A653M gives 1.35 %. Check the edition on the order.

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • EN 10346 guarantees the yield and tensile minimums for the whole structural series, so cold-formed sections can be designed on them.
  • Carbon is limited to 0.20 % and manganese to 1.70 %; none of the mill tables used here sets a carbon-equivalent limit for this grade.
  • The standard gives no maximum yield or tensile strength for S350GD, so actual coil strength may be well above the minimums.
  • Made with zinc (+Z) or zinc-iron (+ZF) coating; the coating mass (for example Z275) is ordered separately.
  • Formed cold; its higher strength means less formability than DX51D.

Heat treatment

  • Supplied as coated, annealed strip or cut sheet; no further heat treatment is intended.
  • Zinc melts at about 420 °C, so annealing, stress relieving or hot forming after coating damages the zinc layer.
  • Welding: resistance spot and arc welding are used; extract zinc fume and follow the supplier's guidance for thin gauges.

Typische Anwendungen

  • Roll-formed purlins, rails and light-gauge framing
  • Profiled roof and floor decking
  • Racking, shelving and storage uprights
  • Cable trays, support systems and general structural sheet parts

Fragen und Antworten

Common questions

What is the equivalent of S350GD in ASTM?

ASTM A653/A653M SS Grade 50 (Class 1, 2, 3 or 4) is the closest. Grade 50 has a 340 MPa (50 ksi) minimum yield, close to the 350 MPa of S350GD, but the tensile minimum depends on the class (450 MPa for Class 1, against 420 MPa for S350GD).

What does GD mean in S350GD?

In S350GD, S marks a structural steel, 350 is the minimum yield strength in MPa, and GD marks a steel for hot-dip coated flat products. The coating follows the name, as in S350GD+Z275.

What is the Indian equivalent of S350GD?

IS 277:2018 GP350 Class-1 is the closest: yield at least 350 MPa and tensile at least 420 MPa. Its minimum A80 is 12 %, against 16 % for S350GD, so check elongation if forming is severe.

Is SGC490 equivalent to S350GD?

It is often listed that way, but SGC490 has a 365 MPa yield and 490 MPa tensile minimum, both higher than S350GD. SGC440 (335 and 440 MPa) is closer in strength.

Is S350GD weldable?

Yes, by resistance spot and arc processes. The grade limits carbon to 0.20 % and EN 10346 gives no carbon-equivalent limit for it. The zinc coating needs fume extraction, and the weld area may need re-coating for corrosion protection.
