On equivalence

  • No cross-region name is identical to DX53D. ASTM A653 DDS, IS 277 GPD and JIS SGCD2 are the closest matches; SGCD3 and IS 277 GPED are one step tighter.
  • A653 DDS has lower carbon (≤0.06 %) and manganese (≤0.50 %) than DX53D and gives typical, not mandatory, mechanical ranges: yield 140–240 MPa (20–35 ksi), elongation at least 32 % in 50 mm.
  • IS 277 and JIS grades list maxima or minima differently from EN. IS 277 GPD caps yield at 280 MPa and tensile at 430 MPa; JIS SGCD grades give a tensile minimum of 270 MPa and elongation by thickness, with no yield requirement.
  • Elongation gauges differ: EN 10346 and IS 277 quote A80 (80 mm), A653 and JIS quote 50 mm, so the numbers cannot be compared directly.
  • Coating masses are ordered separately; see the DX51D page for the Z, G, IS 277 class and JIS Z equivalences.
  • St 05 Z is a superseded DIN name listed against DX53D by stockists; do not specify it on new orders.

In practice

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Deep-drawing quality: the yield range is capped at 260 MPa so the sheet flows in the die, and A80 is at least 30 %.
  • DX53D has no minimum r (plastic strain ratio) or n (strain hardening) value in EN 10346; DX54D is the first grade to carry both.
  • Carbon is limited to 0.12 %, below DX51D (0.18 %), and manganese to 0.60 %.
  • Supplied with zinc (+Z) or zinc-iron (+ZF) coating; the coating mass is ordered as a separate designation such as Z100, Z140 or Z275.
  • Weldable by resistance spot and arc welding; extract zinc fume.

Heat treatment

  • Supplied as coated, annealed strip or cut sheet; no further heat treatment is intended.
  • Zinc melts at about 420 °C, so annealing or hot forming after coating damages the zinc layer.
  • Forming is done cold; set draw radii, lubrication and blank holder pressure for the sheet thickness and coating.

Typische Anwendungen

  • Deep-drawn and pressed parts such as appliance housings and panels
  • Automotive and transport body parts that do not need the DX54D–DX57D grades
  • Furniture, bins and storage components
  • Stamped brackets, covers and enclosures

Fragen und Antworten

Common questions

What is the equivalent of DX53D in ASTM?

ASTM A653/A653M DDS (deep drawing steel) is the closest. DDS has lower carbon (≤0.06 %) and manganese (≤0.50 %) than DX53D, and its mechanical ranges are typical rather than mandatory.

What is the difference between DX53D and DX51D?

DX53D is a deep-drawing grade: carbon ≤0.12 %, yield 140–260 MPa, tensile 270–380 MPa, A80 ≥30 %. DX51D is for bending and profiling: carbon ≤0.18 %, no yield limit, tensile 270–500 MPa, A80 ≥22 %.

What is the Indian equivalent of DX53D?

IS 277:2018 GPD (deep drawing) is the closest, with GPED (extra deep drawing) as a tighter alternative. GPD gives maxima: yield 280 MPa, tensile 430 MPa, and A80 at least 26 %.

Is SGCD3 the same as DX53D?

No. JIS G 3302 SGCD3 is extra deep drawing quality (carbon ≤0.08 %) and has a tensile minimum of 270 MPa with higher elongation requirements than DX53D. SGCD2 is the closer match to DX53D.

Does DX53D have r and n values?

No minimum r90 or n90 value is specified for DX53D in EN 10346. The standard first sets them for DX54D (r90 1.6, n90 0.18) and tighter grades.
