On equivalence

  • DC06 has no exact equivalent. ASTM A1008 EDDS and JIS SPCG both specify carbon ≤0.02 % and non-ageing steel, so they are the nearest chemistry matches.
  • IS 513 CR5 is the IF grade but allows 0.06 % carbon against 0.02 % for DC06 and requires only A80 38 % and r-bar 1.7, so it is a looser grade.
  • SPCG's r-bar is only 1.4–1.5 minimum and it has no n requirement; DC06 guarantees r90 of 2.1 and n90 of 0.220.
  • ASTM A1008 gives only typical properties for EDDS, so there is no mandatory mechanical match to EN 10130.
  • Sources disagree on the yield lower limit: Roy Mech gives 120–170 MPa, Salzgitter gives up to 180 MPa and one distributor page gives 120 MPa as a minimum. Order to the maximum and check the mill certificate.

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Titanium-stabilised (or niobium-stabilised) interstitial-free steel with carbon of 0.02 % maximum; the stabilisers fix carbon and nitrogen, so the steel is non-ageing and forms without stretcher-strain marks.
  • Guaranteed r90 of 2.1 and n90 of 0.220, the best forming values in the standard apart from DC07; yield strength is limited to 170 MPa and A80 is at least 41 %.
  • Tensile strength of 270–330 MPa. Mechanical properties are valid for six months from dispatch, but there is no limit on stretcher-strain behaviour.
  • Salzgitter's DC06 data sheet gives its own guaranteed values: yield up to 180 MPa, tensile 270–350 MPa, A80 at least 38 %, r90 at least 1.8 and n at least 0.22. Mill sheets can differ from the standard table.
  • EN 10130 defines two surface qualities. Quality A allows small defects that do not impair forming or coating (pores, light scratches, slight dents, slight colour change). Quality B requires the better side to be free of defects that would show through high-grade paint or electroplating, with the other side at least quality A; B is for skin-passed product only and not every size is offered in it.
  • Skin-passed sheet can be ordered with a roughness finish: bright b (Ra up to 0.4 µm), semi-bright g (up to 0.9 µm), normal m (0.6–1.9 µm, the default) or rough r (above 1.6 µm). The finish cannot be specified for non-skin-passed product.
  • Thin-gauge adjustments in EN 10130 apply to yield (+20 MPa from 0.5 to 0.7 mm, +40 MPa at 0.5 mm and below) and A80 (−2 and −4 points). r90 and n90 apply from 0.5 mm, and r90 falls by 0.2 above 2 mm.
  • Welds readily by resistance spot and arc processes because of the very low carbon content.
  • Available as DC06+ZE (electrolytic zinc, EN 10152) and as DX57D hot-dip galvanized (EN 10346); the coated grades have their own standards.

Heat treatment

  • Supplied cold rolled, then annealed (batch or continuous) and skin-passed. It is a non-hardening steel; quenching adds nothing.
  • Stabilisation with titanium or niobium removes the yield point after annealing, so skin passing is for surface and flatness, not for suppressing ageing.
  • Preheat is not normally needed when welding thin sheet; stress relieving is not required.

Typische Anwendungen

  • Automotive outer skin panels and highly stressed deep-drawn parts
  • Complex body structural components with large draw ratios
  • Deep-drawn appliance and sanitary parts, tubs and housings
  • Parts for painted show surfaces where stretcher-strain lines are unacceptable
  • Pressings with very tight radii where DC05 splits

Fragen und Antworten

Common questions

What is the equivalent of DC06?

The closest equivalents are ASTM A1008 EDDS, IS 513 CR5 (IF) and JIS G 3141 SPCG. None is exact. The EN 10130:1991 name is FeP06 and the old German IF name is IF 18.

What is DC06 steel?

DC06 (1.0873) is interstitial-free cold-rolled steel to EN 10130, stabilised with titanium or niobium so that carbon and nitrogen are fixed. It is non-ageing, soft and highly formable, which is why it is used for severe deep draws and outer car panels.

What is the difference between DC05 and DC06?

DC06 is an IF steel with carbon of 0.02 % maximum and no stretcher-strain limit; DC05 is aluminium killed with up to 0.06 % carbon and a six-month period. DC06 also guarantees higher r90 (2.1 against 1.9) and n90 (0.22 against 0.20).

Is IS 513 CR5 the same as DC06?

CR5 is the Indian stabilised IF grade and the usual pairing, but its limits are looser. It allows 0.06 % carbon, a 190 MPa yield limit and 38 % elongation, against 0.02 %, 170 MPa and 41 % for DC06.

Is DC06 the same as SPCG?

SPCG is the nearest JIS grade. Both have carbon of 0.02 % maximum and manganese of 0.25 % maximum, but SPCG guarantees r-bar of only 1.4–1.5 and no n value, and its yield limit of 190 MPa is informative.
