On equivalence
- EN353 is the 1955 BS 970 name; 815M17 is its name in the later BS 970 system. Total Materia and Roymech map both to the same steel, and Total Materia lists 17NiCrMo6-4 (1.6566) as an official equivalent.
- BS 970-3 limits were seen only in part (carbon 0.14–0.20%, chromium 0.80–1.20%). Check the full 815M17 limits before substituting 17NiCrMo6-4.
- 815M17 is not 18CrNiMo7-6 or 822M17. 18CrNiMo7-6 has 1.50–1.80% chromium and 0.25–0.35% molybdenum. Roymech rates 815M17 at about 1.5% Ni/Cr/Mo and 822M17 (EN355) at about 2.0%.
- India: IS 4432:1988 lists 15Ni5Cr4Mo1 with 0.12–0.18% carbon, so it sits below 815M17. IS 1570 (Part 4) also gives its core properties.
- Japan: SNCM420 has 1.60–2.00% nickel and 0.40–0.60% chromium, against 1.20–1.50% and 0.80–1.10% for 17NiCrMo6-4. There is no close JIS match.
- Phosphorus limit: Saarstahl prints ≤0.035% for 17NiCrMo6-4 while steeldata.info prints ≤0.025%. Confirm on the order.

Common questions
What is EN353 equivalent to?
EN353 is the old name for the grade now ordered as 815M17; its 1955 limits differ slightly. The European equivalent is 17NiCrMo6-4 (1.6566). The nearest Indian grade is 15Ni5Cr4Mo1 (IS 4432) and the nearest Japanese grade is SNCM420, but both differ in composition.
Is 815M17 the same as 17NiCrMo6-4?
They are listed as equivalents. 17NiCrMo6-4 has 0.14–0.20% carbon, 1.20–1.50% nickel and 0.80–1.10% chromium. Check the full BS 970-3 limits against the EN 10084 limits before substituting.
Is EN353 a case-hardening steel?
Yes. EN353 and 815M17 are nickel-chromium-molybdenum case-hardening steels with 0.14–0.20% carbon. They are carburized and hardened to give a hard case over a tough core.
What is the difference between 815M17 and 18CrNiMo7-6?
18CrNiMo7-6 has more chromium (1.50–1.80%) and molybdenum (0.25–0.35%) than 17NiCrMo6-4, so it hardens deeper and is used for larger, more heavily loaded gears.
