1008 low-carbon steel: closest equivalents DC01, SWRM8 and IS 5C4

SAE 1008 is a very low-carbon steel with at most 0.10 % carbon, supplied as sheet, strip, wire and bar for deep drawing and cold forming. No European, British, Indian or Japanese grade matches it exactly: the nearest are DC01 for flat product, SWRM8 for wire rod and IS 5C4.

On equivalence

  • No national standard defines a grade identical to SAE 1008. Each local low-carbon grade is written for one product form, so match the product (sheet, wire rod or bar) before matching the name.
  • DC01 (1.0330) is a cold-rolled flat product under EN 10130 with carbon ≤0.12 % and manganese ≤0.60 %. It is not a bar grade.
  • SWRM8 (JIS G 3505) is wire rod with carbon ≤0.10 % and manganese ≤0.60 % (Total Materia). EN ISO 16120-2 C9D is its wire-rod counterpart in Europe.
  • IS 1570 5C4 is the nearest Indian schedule grade by carbon and manganese. IS 1570 sets only carbon and manganese, so silicon, phosphorus and sulphur come from the product standard.
  • ASTM A1008 is the specification for cold-rolled sheet and strip, not a statement that the steel is SAE 1008.
  • For bar, 1010 (C10E, S10C) is the nearest widely stocked grade.

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Carbon is capped at 0.10 % with 0.30–0.50 % manganese (SAE J403), which makes 1008 one of the softest and most formable plain-carbon grades.
  • SAE J1397 estimated minimums are 303 MPa tensile and 170 MPa yield hot rolled, and 340 MPa tensile and 290 MPa yield cold drawn.
  • The carbon level is too low to harden by quenching. Surface hardness needs carburizing.
  • Cold working is the main way to raise strength: cold drawing lifts the estimated yield from 170 to 290 MPa.
  • Low carbon and manganese give very good weldability and cold-forming behaviour.

Heat treatment

  • Not hardened by quenching at this carbon level.
  • Strength comes from cold work. Hot rolled 1008 has an estimated minimum tensile strength of 303 MPa (44 ksi); cold drawn has 340 MPa (49 ksi).
  • Finished parts that need a hard surface are carburized, then quenched.

Antwoorden op uw vragen

Common questions

What is the equivalent of SAE 1008?

There is no exact equivalent. DC01 (1.0330) is the nearest European flat product, SWRM8 the nearest Japanese wire rod and IS 5C4 the nearest Indian schedule grade. Check the product form before substituting.

Is ASTM A1008 the same as SAE 1008?

No. ASTM A1008 is a cold-rolled sheet and strip specification with grades such as CS and DS. SAE 1008 is a chemical composition for carbon steel in several product forms.

What is the difference between 1008 and 1010 steel?

1008 allows at most 0.10 % carbon and 0.30–0.50 % manganese. 1010 has 0.08–0.13 % carbon and 0.30–0.60 % manganese, and a slightly higher estimated hot-rolled strength (320 MPa against 303 MPa).

Is 1008 steel weldable?

Yes. Its very low carbon content gives excellent weldability with common processes and little risk of hardening in the weld zone.
