Reinforcing bar (rebar) grades compared: ASTM A615 / A706, BS 4449 B500, IS 1786 Fe 500D, JIS SD390
Rebar grades are named after their minimum yield strength: Grade 60 (420 MPa) in the USA, B500B or B500C (500 MPa) in the UK and EU, Fe 415 to Fe 600 in India and SD295 to SD490 in Japan. Grades at the same yield level still differ in ductility, so the ductility class (A706, B500C, the D or S suffix in IS 1786) matters as much as the number.

Read before comparing
- Grades are compared by specified minimum yield (or 0.2 % proof) strength. ASTM grade numbers are in ksi with the MPa grade in brackets (Grade 60 [420]); IS 1786, BS 4449 and JIS numbers are in MPa.
- Ductility classes A, B and C (BS 4449 and EN 1992-1-1 Annex C) are set by the tensile-to-yield ratio Rm/Re and the total elongation at maximum force Agt: A ≥1.05 and ≥2.5 %, B ≥1.08 and ≥5.0 %, C 1.15–<1.35 and ≥7.5 % (characteristic values).
- In IS 1786 the D suffix keeps the same yield as the base grade but raises elongation (Fe 500: 12 %, Fe 500D: 16 %) and requires Agt ≥5 %. The S grades, added by amendment, cap the yield and require TS/YS ≥1.25.
- EN 10080 sets general requirements for weldable reinforcing steel but does not itself define B500 grades. The grades and ductility classes come from national standards (BS 4449, DIN 488 and others) and Eurocode 2.
- Fe 415 is close to ASTM Grade 60 and Fe 500 to B500, but elongation measures differ (gauge lengths and Agt rules), so a bar certified to one standard is not automatically compliant with another.
- Japanese SD grades specify both a lower and an upper yield limit (for SD345 and above) and a maximum yield ratio of 80 %, which acts as a ductility control.
Questions et réponses
Common questions
Is Fe 500D the same as B500B?
They share a 500 MPa minimum yield but are not identical. Fe 500D (IS 1786) requires tensile strength at least 1.10 × yield and not below 565 MPa, 16 % elongation and Agt ≥5 %. B500B (BS 4449) requires Rm/Re ≥1.08 and Agt ≥5.0 %. They are close equivalents; B500C is the higher-ductility class.
What is the US equivalent of Fe 415 or Fe 500?
Fe 415 (415 MPa yield) is closest to ASTM A615 Grade 60 [420]. Fe 500 has no exact US match: Grade 60 is lower and Grade 80 [550] is higher; Grade 75 [520], in editions that list it, is the nearest.
What is the equivalent of JIS SD390 or SD490?
SD390 (390 MPa minimum yield) is closest to ASTM Grade 60 and IS 1786 Fe 415. SD490 (490 MPa minimum yield) is closest to B500 and Fe 500. SD grades also set a maximum yield, which most other systems do not.
What is the difference between ASTM A615 and A706 rebar?
A615 is plain carbon-steel deformed bar. A706 is low-alloy bar with controlled chemistry for welding, a capped yield range and a tensile strength of at least 1.25 × the actual yield, which is why it is used in seismic design.
What do the A, B and C in B500A, B500B and B500C mean?
They are ductility classes. All three have a 500 MPa characteristic yield; C has the highest required strain at maximum force (7.5 %) and strength ratio (1.15–1.35), B is mid (5.0 %, 1.08) and A is the lowest (2.5 %, 1.05).
