S355JR / S355J0 / S355J2 / S355K2 structural steel (EN 10025-2, 1.0577)
S355J2 is a common higher-strength structural steel of EN 10025-2, with a minimum yield of 355 MPa (51 ksi) up to 16 mm and a tensile strength of 470–630 MPa. The J2 suffix means a 27 J Charpy test at −20 °C, and the nearest equivalents are ASTM A572 Grade 50, IS 2062 E350 and JIS SM490.

On equivalence
- No equivalent is identical. A572 Grade 50, IS 2062 E350 and JIS SM490 are the nearest, but strength, impact testing and chemistry differ.
- ASTM A572 Grade 50 has a 345 MPa yield at all thicknesses to 100 mm, no maximum yield-to-tensile ratio, and no impact test, so it is not a direct match for S355J2 where the −20 °C Charpy matters.
- IS 2062 E350 sets 350 MPa to 20 mm; EN 10025-2 sets 355 MPa to 16 mm. E350 has a 490 MPa tensile minimum against 470 MPa for S355.
- JIS SM490 yield is 325 MPa to 16 mm, lower than S355. SM490YA and SM490YB (365 MPa) are closer on yield but have different chemistry rules.
- Sources disagree on S355J2 and K2 phosphorus and sulphur under EN 10025-2:2019: Saarstahl and Ovako give 0.030 %, while several other mills still quote the 2004 edition’s 0.025 %. Check the edition and limits on the order.
- BS 4360 is withdrawn. 50B maps to S355JR, 50C to S355J0 and 50D to S355J2.
- Metinvest lists A656 and SS490YA as analogues of S355J2; these are not normally used as direct equivalents.

In practice
Behaviour, heat treatment and uses
Characteristics
- Weldable by all common processes; CEV is limited to 0.45 % up to 30 mm (0.47 % from 30 to 150 mm), so thick sections and restrained joints need preheat control.
- JR, J0, J2 and K2 differ in impact testing and in tighter P and S limits; K2 requires 40 J at −20 °C.
- Yield falls with thickness: 355 MPa to 16 mm, 345 MPa to 40 mm, 335 MPa to 63 mm.
- J2 and K2 suit outdoor and cold-climate structures where fracture toughness is specified.
- No inherent corrosion resistance; structures are painted or hot-dip galvanized. S355J2W is the weathering variant and is a different grade.
Heat treatment
- Supplied as rolled; EN 10025-2:2019 also allows delivery normalized or normalized rolled (+N) when ordered.
- Normalizing refines grain in thick sections and improves toughness.
- Preheat depends on thickness, joint restraint and the actual CEV; follow the welding procedure.
- Stress relieving can be applied to welded fabrications where dimensional stability is needed.
Typical uses
- Building frames, beams, columns and trusses
- Bridges, cranes and heavy platforms
- Offshore and wind-tower structures (higher quality variants)
- Plates, sections and flats for bolted and welded connections
- Machine bases, excavator and crane booms, and heavy fabrication

Questions answered
Common questions
What is the equivalent of S355J2 in ASTM?
ASTM A572 Grade 50 is the closest plate and shape grade (345 MPa yield). It has no guaranteed impact test, so for cold-climate work ASTM A709 Grade 50 with a Charpy requirement is closer to S355J2.
What is the difference between S355JR, S355J0, S355J2 and S355K2?
Only the impact test and the P and S limits. JR is tested at 20 °C, J0 at 0 °C and J2 at −20 °C, each at 27 J. K2 needs 40 J at −20 °C. Yield and tensile strength are the same.
What is the Indian equivalent of S355J2?
IS 2062 E350, in quality BR, B0 or C depending on the impact test. Minimum yield is 350 MPa against 355 MPa, and it has a 490 MPa tensile minimum.
Is S355J2 the same as St 52-3?
St 52-3 is the old DIN name. St 52-3 N corresponds to S355J2 and St 52-3 U to S355J0. In BS 4360 the counterpart of S355J2 was grade 50D.
What is the yield strength of S355J2?
At least 355 MPa for thickness up to 16 mm, 345 MPa from 16 to 40 mm and 335 MPa from 40 to 63 mm. Tensile strength is 470–630 MPa.
