| Índia | IS 5986 | Grade 355IS 5986 covers hot-rolled sheet, plate and strip for forming and flanging. Total Materia gives 355 MPa yield and 420–530 MPa tensile; the standard text was not accessible. | IS 5986 | Closest equivalent |
| Japan | JIS G 3134 | SPFH540Automotive structural hot-rolled sheet. Its 540 MPa tensile minimum sits above S355MC's 430–550 MPa band, so it is a stronger grade. | JIS G 3134 | Closest equivalent |
On equivalence
- No equivalent is identical. S355MC is a 355 MPa yield, micro-alloyed, cold-forming strip; ASTM A1011 HSLAS Grade 50, IS 5986 Grade 355 and JIS SPFH540 are the nearest national grades.
- ASTM A1011 HSLAS Grade 50 has a 340 MPa (50 ksi) yield minimum and a 448 MPa (65 ksi) tensile minimum for Class 1, close to S355MC's 355 MPa and 430–550 MPa; Class 2 has a different tensile minimum.
- JIS G 3134 SPFH540 needs at least 540 MPa tensile strength, which is the top of S355MC's band, so it suits only the strongest S355MC coils.
- IS 5986 figures come from Total Materia because the IS 5986 text was not accessible; Total Materia also lists IS 5986 Grade 355 with a 18 % elongation minimum.
- Salzgitter gives S ≤0.020 % (0.010 % if agreed) for S355MC, while SSAB's own Domex 355MC limits sulphur to 0.010 %; check the order and the mill certificate.
- SSAB's A1011 HSLAS Grade 50 page mixes HSLAS and HSLAS-F wording; the composition shown matches HSLAS Grade 50 limits.

In practice
Behaviour, heat treatment and uses
Characteristics
- Low carbon (≤0.12 %) micro-alloyed with niobium, vanadium and titanium, so the strength comes from fine grains and precipitates rather than carbon; typical carbon equivalent is low (SSAB quotes CEV 0.17 for Domex 355MC).
- Welds with all common methods and consumables; the low carbon equivalent keeps preheat requirements minimal in normal thicknesses.
- Made for cold forming: Salzgitter recommends minimum inside bend radii of 0.25 times thickness up to 3 mm, 0.5 times from 3 to 6 mm and 1.0 times above 6 mm for bends to 90°.
- SSAB's Domex 355MC datasheet gives tighter bend radii for its own product, from 0.2 times thickness (1.8–3 mm) to 0.5 times (6–16 mm) at 90°; use the supplier's figure for the coil you buy.
- EN 10149-2 sets no impact requirement for the base grade; SSAB offers 355MC D (40 J at −20 °C) and 355MC E (27 J at −40 °C) variants for 6 mm and over.
- Heat above about 580 °C can cost the guaranteed properties (SSAB): avoid stress relieving or hot forming above that.
Heat treatment
- Delivered thermomechanically rolled and coiled; the strength is produced in the rolling mill and is not heat-treatable.
- Do not normalise, quench or heat above about 580 °C after forming, because the thermomechanical properties are lost (SSAB).
- Hot-dip galvanizing is possible: EN 10149-2 silicon categories exist for thin (category A, Si ≤0.03 % as in Domex 355MC) and thick (category B) zinc coatings.
- Cold-formed and bent parts need no stress relief in normal practice.
Usos típicos
- Automotive chassis and frame rails, cross-members and wheel parts
- Commercial vehicle and trailer frames, truck bodies
- Cranes, lifting equipment and agricultural machinery
- Cold-formed structural sections, roll-formed profiles and press-brake parts
- Light-weight steel frames and welded tubes where a 355 MPa yield is required

Perguntas respondidas
Common questions
What is the equivalent of S355MC?
The closest national grades are ASTM A1011 HSLAS Grade 50, IS 5986 Grade 355 and JIS G 3134 SPFH540. None is identical: yield, tensile range and chemistry differ, so check the figure your design relies on.
What does S355MC mean?
S means structural steel, 355 is the minimum yield strength in MPa, M means thermomechanically rolled and C means suitable for cold forming. It is covered by EN 10149-2.
What is the minimum bend radius of S355MC?
Salzgitter recommends 0.25 times thickness up to 3 mm, 0.5 times from 3 to 6 mm and 1.0 times above 6 mm for bends up to 90°. SSAB's Domex 355MC allows 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 times thickness in the same bands. Use your supplier's figure.
Is S355MC weldable?
Yes. With carbon at 0.12 % or less and a typical carbon equivalent near 0.17 (SSAB), it welds by common processes without special preheat in normal thicknesses. Avoid prolonged heating above about 580 °C.
What is the difference between S355MC and S355J2?
S355J2 is a normal hot-rolled structural plate and section steel to EN 10025-2; S355MC is a thermomechanically rolled strip to EN 10149-2 with lower carbon, finer grain and a guaranteed bend radius for cold forming.
