S355J2H (1.0576) hollow section: EN 10219 and EN 10210, with ASTM A500 C, IS 4923 Yst 355 and JIS STKR490

S355J2H (1.0576) is the standard European structural hollow section grade: a non-alloy steel with 355 MPa minimum yield, 470–630 MPa tensile strength and 27 J impact energy at −20 °C, made cold formed to EN 10219-1 or hot finished to EN 10210-1. ASTM A500 Grade C, IS 4923 Yst 355 and JIS G 3466 STKR490 are its closest equivalents elsewhere.

On equivalence

  • A500 Grade C is the usual US pairing, but it requires lower tensile strength, no impact test and a different composition. A1085 is closer on toughness.
  • S355J2H and S355J2 (plates and sections, EN 10025-2) are different products with similar names; do not substitute one for the other without checking the standard.
  • BS 4360 Grade 50D hollow sections are the usual UK predecessor; BS 4360 and BS 6363 are withdrawn.
  • IS 4923 and IS 1161 are graded by yield only; Yst 355 has a 355 MPa minimum yield but no impact requirement or CEV limit in the figures found, so it is not a drop-in substitute.
  • JIS G 3466 STKR490 has 325 MPa minimum yield, below 355 MPa. JIS G 3444 STK490 is for round tubes.
  • The 2006 edition of EN 10219-1 and EN 10210-1 are still the editions quoted in most declarations of performance; check current editions for new work.

Behaviour, heat treatment and uses

Characteristics

  • Fully killed steel with nitrogen-binding elements; carbon equivalent (CEV) is limited to 0.45 for walls up to 16 mm.
  • Impact tested at −20 °C (27 J), suitable for outdoor and low-temperature structures.
  • The designation is the same for cold-formed (EN 10219) and hot-finished (EN 10210) sections, but their delivery conditions and tolerances differ. State the full standard on the order.
  • Tensile range is 470–630 MPa for walls from 3 mm and 510–680 MPa below 3 mm in EN 10219-1.
  • EN 1090-2 requires a 3.1 inspection document for structural steel above S275 (Tata Steel UK declaration).

Heat treatment

  • EN 10219 sections are cold formed from strip and welded, with no heat treatment after forming.
  • EN 10210 sections are hot finished. Normalized versions have their own names (S355NH, S355NLH), and Tata Steel certifies Celsius 355 to both S355NH and S355J2H.
  • Hot-dip galvanizing is routine for hollow sections; see the galvanizing standards page.

Usos típicos

  • Building frames, columns, trusses and bracing
  • Bridges, stadium roofs and offshore structures
  • Crane booms, towers and masts
  • Machine bases and heavy fabricated frames

Perguntas respondidas

Common questions

What does S355J2H mean?

S means structural steel, 355 is the minimum yield strength in MPa, J2 means 27 J impact energy at −20 °C, and H means hollow section.

What is the difference between EN 10219 and EN 10210 S355J2H?

EN 10219 covers cold-formed welded sections, EN 10210 hot-finished sections. The grade name and the 355 MPa yield are the same, but hot-finished sections hold a higher yield in thick walls and have uniform properties around the section.

Is S355J2H the same as S355J2?

No. S355J2 (EN 10025-2) is a plate and section grade. S355J2H is the hollow section version with its own standard, composition and tolerances.

What is the American equivalent of S355J2H?

ASTM A500 Grade C is the usual match and A1085 Grade A is closer for toughness. Neither is identical: A500 requires lower tensile strength and no impact test.

What is the Indian equivalent of S355J2H?

IS 4923 Yst 355 for square, rectangular and round sections, or IS 1161 Yst 355 for circular tubes. They are graded by yield strength and do not require the S355J2H impact test.
