Pole-Line Hardware

Overhead distribution lines hang on hardware that stays out in the weather on a wood pole for as long as the line is up. Corona makes the galvanized steel parts linemen bolt, screw and drive into that pole: machine, hex and carriage bolts, double arming bolts, spool bolts, lag screws, washers, nuts, ground rods and screw anchors for the guys. Each part is made to ANSI C135.1, BS 4190 or the pattern the utility specifies.

Pole-Line Hardware: wooden utility pole with timber crossarms, steel crossarm braces, bolts and guy wires

Where it's used

Hardware for every part of the pole.

Crossarm construction

Every tangent, angle and dead-end pole carries crossarms that hold the insulators and conductors clear of the pole. The arms are through-bolted to the pole, braced, and doubled where the line pulls hardest. Machine / Square Headed Bolt, Double Arming Rod, Carriage Bolt, Washers and Square Nut cover it.

Secondary and service lines

Low-voltage secondary and service drops run on spool insulators mounted on racks or straight on the pole. The spool bolt carries the insulator and bolts through the pole or the rack. Spool Bolt, Washers, Square Nut and Hex Nut cover it.

Guying and anchoring

Angles, dead-ends and long spans pull a pole off vertical unless a guy wire holds it back to an anchor in the ground. A screw anchor is turned into the soil at the lead and the guy is made off to its eye. Earth Anchor / Auger, Hex Nut and Washers cover it.

Grounding and earthing

Transformers, arresters and neutral conductors on the pole are bonded to earth through a rod driven beside its base. The rod is driven to depth and the ground wire is clamped to its top. Ground Rod covers it.

Pole attachments and maintenance

Brackets, pole steps, cable guards and riser supports are fixed to the pole without drilling through it. Crews also replace corroded bolts and nuts during line maintenance. Lag Bolt, Hex Headed Bolt, Carriage Bolt, Hex Nut and Washers cover it.

Five families

Parts grouped by the job they do.

Product family

Through bolts

Long galvanized bolts that pass right through the pole to clamp crossarms and hardware to it.

Double Arming Rod

Product family

Arming and insulator bolts

Bolts shaped for one job on the pole: doubling crossarms, or carrying a spool insulator.

Lag Bolt

Product family

Wood fixings

Coarse-threaded lag screws driven into the pole where a bolt cannot pass through.

  • Lag BoltFixes brackets and steps into the wood.
Washers

Nuts and washers

The nuts and bearing washers that finish every bolted joint on the pole.

  • WashersSquare, curved, round and lock washers.
  • Square NutSquare nut for machine and arming bolts.
  • Hex NutHex and heavy hex nuts for bolts and rods.
Earth Anchor / Auger

Anchoring and grounding

The steel that goes into the ground: anchors for the guys and rods for the earth connection.

Questions answered

Common questions about pole-line hardware.

Why do pole-line bolts come with square heads and square nuts?
Square heads and nuts are the North American pole-line pattern set out in ANSI C135.1. A square nut bears on a wider area of wood and is easier to turn with a lineman's wrench. UK and Commonwealth utilities often specify hex bolts to BS 4190 instead. Corona makes both.
What is a double arming bolt used for?
A double arming bolt is threaded full length with a point at each end. It passes through two crossarms mounted either side of a pole, with nuts clamping each arm, so the pair shares the load at angles and dead-ends. Corona makes them in 5/8 to 1 1/4 in (M16 to M32) diameters.
What is a spool bolt?
A spool bolt carries a spool insulator for secondary or service conductors. Its forged shoulder, single or double, sets the insulator clear of the pole or rack. Corona supplies it in 5/8 in (M16) with nuts, lock washers, a round washer and a cotter pin.
What galvanizing do pole-line bolts and nuts get?
Corona hot dip galvanizes pole-line hardware to ASTM A153, or to BS 729 / ISO 1461 for UK and Commonwealth orders. Nuts are tapped oversize so they run freely on a galvanized thread.
What sizes of ground rod does Corona make?
Galvanized ground rods in 5/8 and 3/4 in (M16 and M20) diameters, 6, 8 and 10 ft (2 to 3 m) long, with a pointed end for driving. UL 467 sizes are made on request.
How is a screw anchor chosen for a guy?
Buyers choose the helix diameter to suit the soil, and the rod diameter and length to suit the guy and the depth. Corona makes screw anchors with 1/2 to 1 in (12 to 25 mm) rods and 4 to 10 in (100 to 250 mm) helixes, painted, powder coated or galvanized.
