Truss Rod: galvanized threaded steel rod with nut and washer for fence frame bracing

Fencing Components

Truss Rod

Truss Rod is a round steel rod fitted diagonally from the brace rail back to the foot of a chain-link fence's terminal post, where a truss tightener draws it tight. It keeps end, corner and gate posts upright against the pull of the stretched mesh. Corona supplies it with a hot dip galvanized hex nut on 12 in of threads at one end. Specify the diameter, length, finish and the quantity you need.

Function

Braces terminal posts against fabric pull

A diagonal steel rod installed from the brace rail at a line post back to the base of the terminal post, tightened with a truss tightener to resist the cumulative outward pull of the chain-link mesh on the fence's end and corner posts.

Product form

Diameter and length for fence height

3/8 in (9.5 mm) and 1/2 in (12.7 mm) round stock; supplied in standard lengths from 10 to 20 feet (3.0–6.1 m), with a hot-dip galvanized hex nut factory-fitted on 12 inches of threads at one end.

When it is used

Taller fences and fences without a top rail

Chain-link specifications call for bracing and trussing on the terminal posts of taller fences, and on fences built without a top rail.

Common applications

Where it is used.

Application

Commercial chain-link

Brace the terminal posts of commercial and industrial chain-link runs where the mesh is stretched between them.

Application

Corner and gate posts

Corner posts take mesh from two directions and gate posts carry the gate as well, so both are braced with a rod on each side that needs it.

Application

Replacement bracing

Replace bent or rusted truss rods on existing fences, matched to the diameter and length of the original.

Questions answered

Common questions.

What is a truss rod called in other regions?
Truss Rod is the US chain-link term. Continental European fences usually brace their end posts with a strut instead, called a jambe de force in French and a saetta in Italian, and Spanish-language suppliers use tirante for the diagonal brace.
When does a chain-link fence need a truss rod?
A chain-link fence needs a Truss Rod on each terminal post that is braced, which chain-link specifications call for on taller fences and on fences built without a top rail. Corona makes it in 3/8 and 1/2 inch rounds, 10 to 20 ft long, with a hex nut on 12 inches of thread for the tightener.
